“OAKLAND, Calif. – A slew of  May Day rallies and marches are happening across the Bay Area on Tuesday to mark the first day of May, otherwise known as International Workers Day.

This year’s events are focused on the fight for worker’s rights and the struggle of immigrants.

At 10 a.m., members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union held a mutually agreed up, work-sanctioned work stoppage at the Port of Oakland to hold a rally, instead of using that time for the group’s monthly meeting.

Afterward, activists marched to Oakland City Hall. Another rally was held outside the Frank Ogawa Plaza at 3 p.m. where protesters will push back against President Trump’s immigration crackdown.

Also on Tuesday morning, there was a prayer vigil outside the West County Detention Center in Richmond, where undocumented immigrants are held in ICE custody. Faith leaders want the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s office to restore the visitation program for detained immigrants.

And in San Francisco, there was a noon rally focused on the city’s housing crisis that’s driving out workers. ”
