African Advocacy Network (AAN) is a San Francisco-based program founded in 2009 to serve the growing Diaspora of African and Afro-Caribbean immigrants. AAN provides immigration legal services, case management, and social integration services based on a unique Cultural Brokering model. AAN couples these programs with experienced and trained linguistic capacity in more than ten languages that span the African continent such as Amharic, Tigrinya, and Arabic to French, Wolof, Berber, Sonufu, and more.

Immigration Legal Services

AAN offers immigration legal services for African and Afro-Caribbean immigrants working towards securing a legal status and beyond in the USA. Were the only African Immigrant member of the city-wide San Francisco Immigrant Legal Education Network (SFILEN), an unprecedented consortium of thirteen legal services providers. We are also a member of the San Francisco Language Access Network (SFLAN), a network of eight organizations and the working to ensure that immigrants are served in culturally and linguistically matter.

With 4 Department of Justice (DOJ) Accredited Representatives, AAN provides the following services:

  • Consular Processing
  • VAWA
  • U-Visa
  • Citizenship & naturalization
  • Work Permit
  • Asylum applicants
  • Temporary Protected Status Program (TPS)
  • Workshops and public education on immigration benefits

Joe Sciarrillo, ACSW-/ BIA Accredited Representative, grew up in the Bay Area. He earned a BS in Foreign Service from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. in 2006. He also received an African Studies Certificate along with a French Proficiency Certificate. He completed a Study Abroad program at the Centre Baobab and Universite Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar, Senegal between 2004 and 2005. Joe assists with legal consultation, legal counseling and legal processing, psycho-social case management. He also performs outreach to immigrant communities through fairs and Know Your Rights workshops. In May 2014, Joe completed studies at UC Berkeley and earned a Master’s degree in Social Work. Joe is registered in California as an Associate Clinical Social Worker and currently doing asylum psychological evaluations under the supervision of Dr. Ann Tran.
